Other GON Reader Comments:
•
I am generous with family and friends, but also give to charities.
•
My adult children and I don't exchange gifts. We plan a 3 or 4 day
vacation together with wives and grandchildren. I also give them
money for the grandchildren. They can use it to buy something , share
an experience, put it in the bank, etc. it's totally up to the parents.
Grand kids are 4, 6 and 8 years old.
•
I give lots of gifts to close family, edibles to some friends, donate to
charities - and stay flexible.
•
I buy gifts for many co-workers and my team members, as well as
family and friends.
•
In the Netherlands, we buy gifts for the birthday of Saint Nicholas (the
predecessor of father Christmas).
•
I also donate to charities and make homemade edible gifts to give to
others.
•
I give money to my five grandchildren.
•
I give gift cards. Visa to kids to buy what they want, grocery store or
gas station for adults, and Kohl’s to kids’ mothers.
•
We do Angel Trees. We buy gifts for the little people in the family, 12
and older. We all bring a gift and play Santa.
•
Up until this year, I bought and gave lots of gifts to family and friends.
This year, I have moved to another country and will not be celebrating
Christmas.
•
As adults, we no longer gift others in the family. Tips are given to
people who provide us with a service, hair stylist, lawn maintenance
person, etc.
•
I try to stay in my gift giving budget, but often go beyond by a little
amount
•
I give money.
•
We give cash to the kids. They all have a shopping spree day after
Christmas. They get what they want, learn to budget, and everyone is
happy.
•
We save all year and buy for 4 kids, 13 grands, 9 greats that fit our
savings budget.
•
I can never think of good gifts for those around me, so I rarely give
gifts. I also hate shopping.
•
I am 78 years old. I’ve given for many years. Family is so huge that it
got out of hand. We really want to enjoy the season without the stress
and this way helps a lot!
•
I buy and give gifts to family and close friends, but they aren't for
Christmas.
•
I do a combo of things - gifts to family and friends - especially children;
contributions to charity and grandkids college fund and some
homemade edible gifts.
•
We buy gifts for the younger grandchildren/great-grandchildren, give
checks to the older ones and to our children, and either a small gift or
donation to a charity for old friends.
•
I do try to stick to a Xmas budget each year, but usually go over it by a
little bit. I don't believe anyone should go into debt for Xmas gift giving.
•
It is a combination of two of the above. I buy and give gifts to a small
selection of family. I make handmade gifts for a small selection of
family.
•
I give money to the grandkids so they can buy what they like. The
adults buy one gift that is wrapped and on Christmas Eve we have fun
with a gift exchange. Everyone gets a number. For example, 16 adults
would get numbers 1 through 16 and the one with number 1 goes first
by selecting a gift and opening it. Then number 2 can either pick a new
gift or steal number 1's and 1 must open another gift. Number 3 can
steal either of the opened gifts or choose another one to open. A gift
can only be stolen twice and then is kept by the second stealer.
Everyone has a lot of fun and the kids love to watch the adults being
funny.
•
I write a check to my nephew and his family who can use the money,
buy a token gift for a small group of women in our church office and
donate money to various charities including my church. When I
worked, we all chose our favorite charity to donate to rather than
exchange gifts that no one needed. My family and friends decided to
do that as well.
•
I make 99% of my gifts, starting in July. The 1% I get are “like new”
from yard sales
•
My favorite part of Christmas is a tradition we started years ago. We
receive two children through the Salvation Army's Dress A Live Doll
program. We have fun picking the clothes, toys, etc. and make a night
of wrapping it all for them. I feel like Santa when I do this . I also love
to buy gifts for family and friends. But after this year I would just love to
spend time with all of them.
•
I make edible gifts (fudge) for several families and give gifts to children
only.
