QUESTION:

What do you typically do with items that are

still good, but you no longer need them?

Here’s how GON Readers responded… 63% I donate them 10% They continue taking up residence in my home  9% I give them to family and friends  7% Other  5% I sell them  5% I throw them away  1% I store them in a paid storage facility Other GON Reader Comments: I try to give them to someone who will use them, donate them, or sell them. I don't like to throw away perfectly good items. A combination of all of the above, except I never pay for storage. Trying to get better about getting things out of the house when no longer useful to me. Usually donate, but prefer to give to an organization that can use it. But, it’s not always easy to find out who or where or how. I am still trying to figure that out, because things I think should be kept for sentimental reasons or are useful, others might not want them, so it is a struggle to maintain that balance. If I can't sell them, then I donate them. They continue taking up residence in my home.  A combination of several depending on what the item is. I donate some things, but not enough because I am starting to look like a hoarder. Garage sale, then what doesn't sell goes to Goodwill. I do several of the things. First, I try to sell, then donate Give to someone who might be interested, donate some, and continue to keep until a solution is found. (3 of the above) Try to re-purpose...or give to family or donate. I try to give them to someone who can use them or sell them. However, it may take me awhile to do this, so they stay in the house or go into storage. I can't stand to through usable things away. Hence the clutter in my home/life. I ask family first. If not wanted, they are donated. Everything not in usable condition is thrown out. I have lodging included in my job, but it is not large enough for the contents of my former house. I store some, have sold some on eBay or at the flea market, and currently donate surplus items. Donate but will sell more online, since centers are closed or accepting less due to COVID 19. Depending on the item, I'll sell, donate, or give to a friend or family member. If I get inspired, I sort into sell versus donate piles and then try to act on that. If it would sell for more than a few bucks, I try to sell it online, otherwise donate it. Many are items I thought my kids would want, but at 24, they are minimalist and don't see the value in holding on to it just in case, like I do. Right now, there are still a lot of things "taking up residence", but we have been donating a lot of good things and trashing the "junk.” I try to repurpose the item first.
