How would you describe the extent of your

holiday decorating?

Here’s how GON Readers responded… 50% I'd say it's a moderate amount of decorating...not too much, not too little. 27% I keep my holiday decorating super simple. 10% I go ALL OUT. My philosophy is "go big, or go home!" 7% Other 6% I don't decorate for the holidays. Other GON Reader Comments: I do not celebrate the holidays. I book myself away, I go on a vacation somewhere internationally. Last year, due to COVID-19, I booked myself into a local resort. This year, I am traveling 3 hours away to a beach front studio for four days in my country. There are so many holidays between November 15th and January 6th. I can't decorate for all of them. (But I try!) Now that I’m older (75), we’ve slowed down a bit. But I used to decorate everything, every tree, bush, all round roof of house, deer, trees, and snowmen in the yard. I miss it; my husband does not. LOL! But, I still decorate a lot inside. I love Christmas, and the true meaning of it. As I age, I feel like doing less and it's more tiring to bring up all the boxes. I dread the “taking down” at the end of the season. But I love the lights most of all. I use a winter theme that stays in place from December 1 until the end of February…decorating with various types of artificial greens, pine cones, snowflakes, candles, silvers and touches of red. A little something in every room of the house makes for a nice, cozy, and pleasant atmosphere for the winter months. I used to REALLY go all out when I was younger and we did more entertaining. Our immediate family has grown to 32 people and no one has room to accommodate that many easily. We keep it much smaller now and in groups of our Covid bubbles. I still decorate our family room, kitchen, and guest bath areas, but nothing like I used to. Still very festive, but not a week's worth of time! For many years, I loved decorating for all holidays. Unfortunately, I am no longer able to do it. Miss the fun. I can’t do outside lights, but my piano has my manger scene, I have something on every flat surface, and a tree in the living room window. I have everything planned and ready to go for decorating on December 1st. I use a winter theme, so that the décor can remain in place, with a few additions, right up until March. For fall, simple, but Christmas ALL OUT! We always visited relatives on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day so kept our decorations simple. However, last year, because of the virus, we were alone and I had a great desire to decorate. I put up a Christmas tree and other decorations before Thanksgiving! A first for us! In between "all out" and moderate. Each year, as I get older, I simplify a little more and give favorite decorations to my kids. I put up two feathered birds last Xmas on my wood doors and never took them down. So this year’s decorating…DONE! Others may say it’s all out, but some people definitely do more. A real tree in the living room, an artificial tree in dining room, small craft trees and nativity scenes in each living area, groupings of angels, Santas, Dickens village, and a collection of snowmen. Outside lights. Well, maybe we do go all out. Ha, ha! We actually pay somebody to decorate for us. I love the decorations, but not all the work. I’m 80 years old and I still go all out. My daughter and grandchildren always visit to help me…and to take everything down. Back to Web Poll Results Index
