How often do you, or another family member,

clean your microwave?

Here’s how GON Readers responded… 14% Daily. Something is always splattered in it. 22% Weekly. When I clean my kitchen. 23% About once a month. Sometimes less often. 17% Only when something explodes in it. 2% Never. It's a mess. 2% I don't use/have a microwave. 20% Other Other GON Reader Comments: As needed. We both like our microwave to be kept clean, so if we make a mess, we clean it up. This way our microwave is never dirty. I don't use my microwave very much, so it's not on a regular cleaning schedule, but when I do get some splatters, I try to clean them immediately. When I have guests coming that might use it...so embarrassing! After each use. That way it stays clean all the time. My microwave is rarely used, so it gets cleaned quarterly. Approximately every couple of weeks, but definitely whenever things get spilled in it. We use a microwave plate cover and other covered containers from Tupperware, so it very rarely needs cleaned. I do a wipe down occasionally if a liquid has ran over. I clean it immediately. I usually give it a wipe after each use. Have a bit of OCD. Just on rare occasions, a few times a year. Whenever it needs it. I have a house cleaning service once a month and I live alone so that seems to work for me. I clean up spills when they happen, but do in-depth cleaning often. As soon as I see there is a splatter, I wipe it up. We always use a cover for whatever we are heating up, so it rarely gets messy. I put a paper towel over food while heating to reduce splatters. I also have silicon mats on the turn table that can be cleaned as needed. When something explodes in it or every couple of weeks. As needed, no regular time. After several days and especially when I heat something smelly. Exterior wiped daily. We use a cover to prevent explosions so interior needs to be cleaned less frequently. I clean it when it needs it. If something splatters, I clean it up immediately. Dried on gunk is not easy to clean, so it's best to wipe up spills as they happen. I wipe off the top of the microwave every day…and the inside 2 or 3 times a week. We have a "job jar" and whenever this item gets pulled from the jar is when it gets done--usually about every 25 days, if not sooner at times. I wipe the inside every time I use it. Splatters never get left on, and the steam from even a reheated cup of coffee makes it so easy! Weekly, unless something explodes in it; then after its use At least weekly or when something boils over or explodes in it. It stays clean. I clean it when something spills. I also keep food covered while it cooks or warms, and I wipe it down whenever I think it needs it. Whenever it needs it (usually every couple of weeks or so). It's cleaned at a minimum weekly, but whenever I see something that needs to be wiped up, it's cleaned. My husband "forgets" to cover what he puts in the microwave, so I clean it each time after he uses it. We don't use the microwave every day, but frequently over the week. We also use a lid that is kept in the microwave to cover food. Whenever the contents splatter, including the lid, they all get a wash or at least a swipe with a wet cloth. So, not every day, but it gets clean when a mess is made. About every ten days or so, I deliberately wash the oven inside and out well, mess or not. I only clean the microwave when something explodes in it, which isn't very often. In between, I give it a gentle cleaning: more isn't needed (really: I have a very clean microwave). About 3 times a year. Every time there's a spill. But it gets a good wiping every other week. After each use when cooking, usually several times a week but not every day. I don't use it daily...but I DO clean it when I use it! Back to Web Poll Results Index
