Top Ten Lists My Top 10 Ways to Be a Better, More Organized Cook at Home Cooking dinner can be a wonderful, stress-free experience with everything seamlessly turning into a delicious, family meal shortly afterwards, or it can be a chaotic, frustrating time period in your day. The difference all comes down to good organization. Here are my top 10 ways to be a better, more organized cook. 1. Learn how to cut. There are so many things that need to be sliced and diced when you’re cooking. Be sure you have a quality, sharp set of knives, and you’re able to cut various kinds of foods both efficiently and safely. 2. Kitchen shears are so versatile. One of my favorite tools in my kitchen is a pair of kitchen shears. I use it for so many things, like quickly cutting herbs, opening a plastic package, and trimming phyllo pastry. 3. Favorite time-saving tools. There are, of course, other time-saving tools depending on what you cook most often. For instance, I make hard-boiled eggs a lot, so I have an egg slicer in the kitchen. I love my stand mixer for baking. I use my nutcracker, not only to crack nuts, but to twist open small jar tops, like vanilla extract. 4. Create space. You want to have an uncluttered space when you cook. Clear your countertops, stow away rarely used appliances, and be sure your prep space is clean and sanitary. 5. Organize your spices. All good cooks use spices in their recipes. Keep yours on a spice rack or in a drawer, organized alphabetically so you can easily find what you need. Don’t go out and buy an entire set of spices if you don’t have any current use for them...spices go bad over time. Pick up various spices as needed according to your recipes…and realize that if the recipe just calls for a “pinch” of something, and you don’t normally use that spice, you can generally skip it or substitute it with something you use often. 6. Get some pointers. There are several different methods or techniques of cooking. Knowing these major cooking techniques will help you become more successful in the kitchen. Here are a few terms to look up: sautéing, braising, searing, steaming, poaching, and simmering…just to name a few. Keep a laptop or tablet in the kitchen so you can quickly look something up if needed. 7. Read the recipe. Before starting, read through the entire recipe--ingredients and directions. By doing so, you’ll know what to expect, can prep some foods (slice, dice, etc.), AND have plenty of time to react. Also, write down any changes you make to your recipes to jog your memory next time. 8. Prep ahead of time. Before starting a dish, get all the foods, spices, herbs, etc. you need for a recipe together and prepare them as needed. For instance, chop your onions, grind your spices, puree the tomatoes, etc. 9. Get some help. If another person in your house is willing to help with dinner, don’t turn down the offer. Request help when needed. If your spouse and/or kids can prepare the salad, you can prepare other parts of the meal. 10. Clean as you go. Don’t wait until you’re done with ALL of your cooking to clean. If you do, you’re going to end up with piles of stuff all over the kitchen counter and in the sink. As I’m done with each cooking step, like when I’m done chopping veggies on the cutting board, I immediately clean the cutting board and knife before moving on to the next step. You can also use waiting time to clean, like when waiting for a pot of water to boil.
