routines

Keep a Donation Box readily available. Try to add at least one item to this box every single day, and donate the entire box once every few weeks. 2. Banish those Paper Piles: Work on a pile of paper every week. Separate the paper pile into five categories: o Act On Today: Handle these tasks right now and then either toss, mail, or file the paper. o Act on Soon: Decide on the day you’ll be tackling these and get that date and time on your calender. Then, place these into your Tickler File or into an Active Projects Binder. o Reference: File these papers into your filing cabinet. o Pass on: Pass on papers, that don’t belong to you, to the appropriate person. o Toss. Toss everything in this pile in your recycling container. 3. Organize purses/tote bags/briefcases: Once a month, empty purses, tote bags and briefcases onto a table. Get rid of any junk…old lipsticks, receipts you don’t need, etc. Make a pile of anything that doesn’t belong, and then put those items away when you’re done with this organizing project. Put everything else back in your bag. Use cosmetic bags or Ziploc bags as dividers to keep like-items with like-items. 4. Reduce clothing clutter: Try to weed out at least one item a day that you never wear for whatever reason…you don’t like it, it doesn’t fit, it’s too fancy for your everyday needs, etc. 5. Shoe overload? Each week, get rid of at least one pair of shoes, sneakers, boots, etc. that pinch your toes, don’t match any of your outfits, are way too slippery, are out of repair, etc. Do this until all you’re left with is footwear that you use and enjoy wearing. 6. Get rid of the laundry mountain: If you have a laundry mountain, that’s proof that you’re not doing the laundry enough for your family’s needs. I wash and dry one load a day and am always caught up with laundry. If you do the same, but you’re not caught up, you likely need to run two or more loads a day. This usually depends on the size of your family. 7. Banish garage clutter: Clearing out the garage is especially important if your car can’t fit in there with all the clutter or you have so much stuff that it’s a safety hazard. Get rid of one item each day. Little by little, the clutter will vanish. 8. Encourage the kids to declutter: Give them a gold star for every item of theirs that they add to the Donation Box. At the end of every week or two weeks, allow them to “turn in” their stars for a fun reward. 9. Declutter the kitchen: Each day, open one cabinet, or look at one shelf or counter area. Decide what has been sitting there for way too long, unused. These are great candidates for the donation box. Again, getting rid of or donating one item a day keeps the clutter away. 10. Empty out the car: Always keep a few small garbage bags in the car so you can easily contain trash. When you fuel up, empty the trash bag out at the gas station. Remove anything from the car that doesn’t belong in the car…and put those items in their proper homes. Back to Top Ten Index
