Organizing Tech Get Organized to Keep Printer Ink Costs Down…here’s how Printers are relatively inexpensive these days, but the ink for them is not. Here are a few things you can do to help keep ink costs down: 1. Not everything has to be printed at “top of the line” quality. When you can, print at lower quality. The “draft” setting uses less ink. Unless it’s a paper for work or school that you’re giving to someone, draft quality should be just fine. 2. Un-color your world. Sometimes, you can print in black and white, or grayscale, to avoid using up colors. Check your printer settings for this. Not everything has to be printed out in full-color, especially something you’re printing today that will be recycled by tomorrow. 3. Don’t believe it! You do not have to immediately change the cartridge on a printer when it reports a low ink level. Sometimes you can actually print quite a bit more before it runs out. When it tells you a color is low, take that as a signal to restock your inventory, but don’t change the ink until you notice it not printing the particular color you need. 4. Shop for deals, but take precautions. Printer ink can be pricey, and generally buying it from the printer company is the most expensive. I’ve found good deals searching on Amazon for “compatible” printer cartridges. So, definitely shop around. However, be warned…if your printer is still under warranty (usually the first year of ownership), using third party ink may void that warranty. 5. Look before you print. Are you certain everything is spelled correctly? Is everything laid out exactly how you’d like it to be? Don’t print until you’re sure! 6. Think twice. Of course, my most important tip for you to save printer ink, is to think twice before printing in the first place. For instance, if you have a laptop in the kitchen, do you really need to print that recipe when it can be read and followed right on the screen? Do you really need 5 printed copies, or will one do? Can you send the file via PDF, rather than printing it out and mailing it? Definitely good questions to ask!
