Organizing for Kids and Family
This is a big factor in helping kids get
organized

When it comes to getting children organized, “establishing routines” is one
of the biggest factors. Kids need some consistency in their lives…actions
they’re comfortable and familiar with. While variety can be the spice of life,
when it comes to being clutter free and organized, routine is key.
•
Give them a “daily itinerary.” Kids will remember to do things like
brush their teeth, put their toys away, and do their homework when it’s
written out for them. Get their schedule on paper, listing the activity,
day, and time, so they have something to follow. Use “pictures” instead
of words for younger kids who can’t read yet…like a picture of a
toothbrush or a doll.
•
Same place…same time. Be sure kids have “assigned areas” for
playing (this way, toys are all corralled in one room or one space) or for
homework (one designated quiet spot that fosters good concentration.)
•
Teach them to be “good timekeepers.” Stores sell very inexpensive
watches for young kids. Get each of your kids a watch and teach them
how to use it from an early age. Opt for watches with alarms, so you
can teach kids how to set timers for themselves.
•
Give them “homes” for their belongings. Don’t give your kids the
option of sometimes putting one of their possessions in one place, and
then choosing a totally different place tomorrow…all the time.
Designate one specific home for each toy, pair of shoes, etc. and give
them a way to remember that home, perhaps by designating it with a
photo or word label if they can’t remember where it goes.
