Fall Organizing Challenges
October is a wonderful month to give your home and routines a little
seasonal attention. Whether autumn where you live means colorful
leaves and chilly mornings or simply a change on the calendar, these 10
simple fall organizing challenges can help you prepare for the months
ahead.
You don’t have to tackle everything at once. Choose a challenge and do
the small suggested task. By the end of the month, those little efforts can
add up to a home that feels more organized, comfortable, and ready for
the season.
1.
Get your entryway ready for the season: Each day, spend a few
minutes tidying one small part of your entryway. Put away out-of-
season items, straighten shoes, clear unnecessary clutter, or make
room for the things you’re using now.
2.
Give your fall wardrobe some attention: Each day, look at one
article of seasonal clothing, such as a sweater, jacket, pair of jeans,
scarf, or pair of shoes. Keep it if you enjoy wearing it and it fits
comfortably. Otherwise, add it to your donation pile.
3.
Prepare your kitchen for fall cooking: Each day, organize or
clean one small kitchen area or item you’re likely to use this
season. Think slow cooker, soup pot, baking pan, spice shelf,
favorite mug, or pantry shelf.
4.
Tidy up outdoors: Each day, spend a few minutes on a simple
outdoor task that makes sense for your home, weather, and
physical ability. Sweep a porch, put away a summer decoration,
pick up a few sticks, or rake a small amount of leaves if leaves are
falling where you live. Skip anything that requires climbing or feels
physically unsafe.
5.
Check your cold-weather supplies: Each day, locate or check
one item you may need as temperatures change. This might
include an ice scraper, umbrella, flashlight, blanket, gloves, hat, or
other seasonal necessity. If cold weather isn’t part of your climate,
use this challenge to check supplies you rely on during your own
upcoming season.
6.
Make your living space cozier: Each day, spend a few minutes
making one area of your home more comfortable. Wash a throw
blanket, fluff the sofa pillows, clear off an end table, straighten your
reading area, or remove something that makes the room feel
cluttered.
7.
Organize your seasonal décor: Each day, look through a few fall
or Halloween decorations. Display what you love and consider
donating or discarding anything broken, worn out, or no longer your
style. There’s no reason to keep storing decorations you never use.
8.
Do a little fall food organizing: Each day, check one pantry,
refrigerator, or freezer item. Toss anything expired or spoiled, make
plans to use food that needs to be eaten soon, and gradually
create a little breathing room before the holiday season arrives.
9.
Prepare for darker evenings: Each day, check one light source
around your home. Replace a burned-out bulb, dust a lampshade,
make sure a flashlight works, or simply notice whether a frequently
used area could use better lighting. Good lighting becomes
especially important as the days grow shorter in many parts of the
country.
10.
Get a head start on the busy season ahead: Each day, do one
tiny task that your future self will appreciate. Update your calendar,
jot down a gift idea, make an appointment, organize a few greeting
cards, check your supply of stamps, or write down an upcoming
November or December obligation. A few minutes now can make
the end of the year feel much less rushed.
