Organizing Challenges Mini Organizing Challenges: October For each week of October, our mini challenges will be focused on Improving Your Organizing Habits. Week 1 (September 28 - October 4) Give everything you own a permanent home this week. Are you always misplacing your keys, your shoes, your wallet, your eyeglasses, etc.? One way to combat this is to identify those items you’re constantly searching for, give them a permanent home, and put them in that home (and ONLY in that home) when that item is not in use. Week 2 (October 5 - 11) Avoid paper shuffling. Every time you pick up a sheet of paper, instead of putting it aside to “deal with later,” handle it right away. Take the action necessary (if any), and then recycle the paper or file it away in your filing cabinet. Try not to pick up the same paper over and over again. Handle each sheet of paper ONCE. Week 3 (October 12 - 18) Don’t put it down. Put it away. Don’t toss your jacket over the sofa. Don’t put your clothes needing laundering on the treadmill. Don’t toss your purse on the dining room chair. Instead, when you walk into your home, rather than putting anything down in a “temporary” spot, put the item where it belongs right away. Week 4: (October 19 - 25) Don’t over-commit. Before taking on more responsibility, check your schedule carefully to be sure you’re not taking on so much that it’s causing an overwhelming, frustrating, chaotic situation. If you’re always saying yes to everything, try saying no this week. Remember, you’re not saying no to the person…you’re just saying no to the request and, therefore, respecting your time. Week 5: (October 26 - November 1) Pad your time. Stop rushing around and avoid being late to appointments/events by padding your time. Determine how much time it’s going to take for you to get to wherever you have to be. Add 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or even an hour to that deadline, depending on traffic, long lines you may have to wait on, and so on. Set your timer to go off at whatever time you determine would get you to your destination EARLY, and leave when your timer goes off. Don’t try to “get one more thing accomplished” before heading out because that almost always results in you rushing to get to where you have to be.
