Organizing Challenges Mini Challenges: Clutter Trouble Spots When you think of “Clutter Trouble Spots,” what comes to mind? This week’s challenges will help you tackle your clutter head on. 1. Day 1 - Your car. Head to your car with a laundry basket. Bring in everything that should be inside your house. Then, go back out to the car and gather and throw away any empty soda cans or other garbage. 2. Day 2 - Your freezer. Don't get caught in the trap of buying more food while the frozen foods you already own gathers freezer burn. Make a freezer inventory. Then create your menu by beginning with things in the freezer that can be used. 3. Day 3 - Your clothes closet. We all have at least 5 items we wouldn’t be caught dead wearing…and tons more that we just never wear. Get rid of these clothes this week. Donate them. 4. Day 4 - Your kitchen-gadget drawer. At the time, the melon baller, garlic peeler, and pasta measuring tool may have seemed like a good idea. If you haven’t used them even once since you purchased them though, donate them and free up space in your drawer. 5. Day 5 - Boxes in your basement/attic. Grab a musty- dusty box out of your basement or attic, and weed it out. Remember, if you haven’t needed whatever is inside of the box up until now, there’s a very good chance you don’t need it now. Certainly keep a few sentimental items, but display them (instead of boxing them up) or allow yourself one to two sentimental boxes, instead of 10 or more. 6. Day 6 - Your computer. Do you have an overload of email messages in your inbox? What about your computer files? Spend some time today deleting email and files you no longer need. See if you can say goodbye to 100 or more. 7. Day 7 - Your filing cabinet. Most papers that are filed away are NEVER looked at again. Take time today to weed out at least 20 file folders. Be sure to shred any documents displaying vital account numbers (like credit card numbers or social security numbers) before recycling those papers.
