Organizing Challenges Mini Organizing Challenges: April For each week of April, our mini challenges will be focused on “Organizing and Managing Paper.” Week 1 (Mar 28 - Apr 3) ____ Weed out 10 of your thickest file folders. ____ Catch up on your mail. ____ Recycle old newspapers and magazines. Week 2 (Apr 4 - 10) ____ Remove outdated papers from your refrigerator and/or bulletin board. ____ Recycle scraps of paper. Transfer any phone numbers, information, etc. to a phone app or a paper notebook where it’s less likely to get lost. ____ Weed out old business cards. Transfer any contact information to your phone first if needed. Week 3 (Apr 11 - 17) ____ File your taxes by April 15th if you’re expecting a refund. If you are expecting to pay, you have until July 15th to file this year. ____ Say goodbye to expired coupons…or coupons you won’t use before the expiration date. ____ Recycle old product manuals if you can find them online…and especially if you no longer have the product. Week 4: (Apr 18 - 24) ____ Unless you’re in danger of being audited, shred and get rid of tax documents older than 7 years. Check with your accountant first. ____ Recycle old catalogs, directories, and calendars. ____ It’s time to part with old greeting cards you’ve received. OK, keep a few that are incredibly meaningful to you. Part with the rest. Week 5: (Apr 25 - May 1) ____ Let go of old school research papers, especially if you’ve been out of school for quite some time. ____ Recycle take-out menus, except those you use most often. Most take-out menus are available online. ____ Once you’ve checked your bank and credit card statements, most receipts can be discarded. Keep them ONLY if there is a good possibility you’ll be returning the item you purchased, if you need it for insurance valuation, or if needed for taxes. Get rid of receipts for smaller purchases like groceries or a Starbucks coffee.
