Showing your love and affection for someone doesn’t have to be
overcomplicated. By putting forth a small effort, you can show someone
just how much they mean to you. Here are 20 ideas to show your
appreciation to your significant other (SO).
1.
Do Something Thoughtful: Fix or do something to make your SO
happy. Maybe it’s sweeping out the garage, cleaning up the
bathrooms, making a cup of coffee, or taking action on the computer
that doesn’t work, anything to make your partner happy and their life
easier.
2.
Listen: Engage your SO in a meaningful conversation. The best way
for him/her to open up...ask an open-ended question like: Where do
you see us 10 years from now?; What has made you happy lately?; or
If we could take a special vacation, where would you want to go? By
asking deeper questions, you’ll engage in a more meaningful and
deeper level conversation.
3.
Leave Your Trouble Behind: Don’t engage in negative talk like
what’s bothering you at work, what you’re worried about, or any kind
of gossip.
4.
Dress-up for Your Partner: Put some special effort into your
appearance. Maybe you apply a more romantic make-up look, pull
your hair into an up-do, or have your hair and make-up professionally
done. Not only will it be a treat for your partner, but it’s definitely a way
to pamper yourself as well.
5.
No Electronics: Turn off the television and wireless electronics and
concentrate on one another. Snuggle up on the couch with your
favorite beverage and listen to soft music or just talk to one another.
Hint: If possible, avoid this on a night your favorite television show or
big sporting event is taking place.
6.
Flirt: Sometimes little displays of affection like, little touches, kisses
on the cheek, a big kiss or a wink sends a strong nonverbal message
that they’re special!
7.
Clothes: If you’re not one to wear over-the-top tight, sexy clothing,
consider wearing something that is hug-able, like angora, silk, or
velvet.
8.
Romantic Home Cooked Meal: Get rid of the kids, cancel
unimportant social engagements and surprise your SO with a
romantic dinner. Choose foods that are known to be aphrodisiacs like:
chocolate (fondue), fruits (strawberries), spicy foods, entrees with
mushrooms, steak , oysters, spaghetti (think the Disney movie, The
Lady and the Tramp), and wine/champagne.
9.
Better Yet…Cook Together: With some soft music playing in the
background, engage your partner in making dinner together. Sample
each other’s food, talk, and sip a favorite beverage while creating your
meal.
10.
Ignite a Competition: Challenge your partner to their favorite
activity…even if you’re not that great at it! Go to a shooting range and
target clay ducks, play a video game, darts, bowling, favorite board
game, or challenge your partner to a spinning class or a run.
11.
Make a Playlist: Compile a list of your most favorite or romantic
songs. Your playlist could become a timeline of music you and your
SO have enjoyed over the years.
12.
Dance: Slow dance to a favorite, old, slow song, even if it’s in your
living room.
13.
Plan a Creative Date: Skip dinner and a movie for a more
adventurous date like: roller skating, ice skating, snow shoeing,
touring a brewery, or playing laser tag.
14.
Visit a Jazz Club or Other Unique Bar: Visit a bar or restaurant you
wouldn’t normally go to. For instance, a jazz club, martini bar, or piano
bar are places that may be new and exciting to you.
15.
A Picture Says 1,000 Words: Pull out some pictures from a past
vacation, a special event you attended, your wedding, anything to that
will spark a nostalgic conversation.
16.
Write a Love Letter: Handwrite a love letter to your SO and leave it
on their pillow, in their briefcase, on the vanity or in the car. Here is
your opening line…’ I love you because…..’.
17.
Find a Funny Card: If you’re not a love-letter writer, consider
purchasing a fun and hilarious card that says it all.
18.
Massage: Light some candles and give your SO a foot massage, and
you might also consider giving a foot massage back as well.
19.
Plan an Overnighter: Take a road trip and go away for the evening.
Book a hotel or Bed and Breakfast before you leave and enjoy the
time away!
20.
Have a Computer Date: If your SO is overseas or on a business trip,
schedule a Skype call, and eat dinner together online. No
interruptions.
