Showing your love and affection for someone doesn’t have to be
overcomplicated. By putting forth a small effort, you can show someone just
how much they mean to you. Here are 18 ideas to show your appreciation
to your significant other.
1.
Do Something Thoughtful: Fix or do something to make your
significant other happy. Maybe it’s sweeping out the garage, cleaning
up the bathroom, making a cup of coffee, or taking action on the
computer that doesn’t work…anything to make your partner happy and
help make their life easier.
2.
Listen: Engage your better half in a meaningful conversation. The best
way for him/her to open up...ask open-ended questions like: “Where do
you see us 10 years from now?” “What has made you happy lately?” “If
we could take a special vacation, where would you want to go?” By
asking deeper questions, you’ll engage in more meaningful, deeper
level conversations.
3.
Balance Your Conversation: Certainly have a conversation with your
partner if something is bothering you at work or there’s a challenge
you’re worried about. But also balance this with positive, goal-oriented,
solution-focused conversation as well.
4.
Dress-up for Your Partner: Put some special effort into your
appearance. Just because you two have been together for years
doesn’t mean you can’t look nice for each other.
5.
No Electronics: Now and then, power down your devices. Snuggle up
on the sofa together and talk to one another.
6.
Be Affectionate: Displays of affection like a warm hug or a comforting
smile send strong nonverbal messages.
7.
Romantic Home Cooked Meal: Get a sitter to watch the kids, cancel
unimportant social engagements, and surprise your significant other
with a romantic dinner.
8.
Better Yet…Cook Together: With some soft music playing in the
background, engage your partner in making dinner with you.
9.
Ignite a Competition: Challenge your partner to his/her favorite
activity…even if you’re not that great at it! Play a video game or darts,
go bowling, pull out a board game, or challenge your partner to a spin
class.
10.
Make a Playlist: Compile a list of your favorite romantic songs. Your
playlist could become a timeline of music you and your better half have
enjoyed over the years.
11.
Dance: Slow dance to a favorite, old, slow song, even if it’s in your
living room…and even if you (or neither of you) are very good at
dancing.
12.
Plan a Creative Date: Skip dinner and a movie for a more
adventurous date like roller skating, ice skating, snow shoeing, touring
a brewery, or playing laser tag.
13.
Visit a Jazz Club or Other Unique Bar: Visit a bar or restaurant you
wouldn’t normally go to. For instance, a jazz club, martini bar, or piano
bar are places that may be new and exciting to you.
14.
A Picture Says 1,000 Words: Pull out some photos from a past
vacation, a special event you attended, your wedding…anything to that
will spark a nostalgic conversation.
15.
Write a Love Letter: Handwrite a love letter to your partner and leave
it on his/her pillow, in their briefcase, on the vanity, or in the car. Here is
your opening line: “I love you because…”
16.
Find a Sweet Card: If you’re not a love-letter writer, consider
purchasing a sweet greeting card that says it all.
17.
Plan an Overnighter: Take a road trip and go away for the evening.
Book a hotel or Bed & Breakfast before you leave and enjoy the time
away!
18.
Have a Computer Date: If your partner is overseas or on a business
trip, schedule a Facetime call and eat dinner together online. No
interruptions.
