A Fun, Effective Way to Get the Kids to Do
Their Chores

I’ve found that kids who are able to choose their chores themselves, and are
able to do so in a fun way, are more motivated about completing them.
Get two mason jars. Label one “Chores,” and the other “Done.”
Write each chore (age appropriate and fairly easy to accomplish in 10
minutes or so) on popsicle sticks…one chore on each stick. Add additional
sticks like, “Trade a Chore,” “Pick Again,” “No Chores Today,” etc. just for fun.
Each day, have your child choose a stick or two out of the Chores jar, and
when the chore is completed, he or she puts that stick in the Done jar.
Of course, chores should be completed before certain activities, like TV,
video games, playing with friends, etc.
Your child keeps going each day, until the Chores jar is empty and all the
sticks are in the Done jar. Then the system is repeated the following week.
You can even attach mini rewards to each Done stick if you’d like!
