Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate with family, reflect on all that we’re
grateful for, and share a beautiful meal with loved ones. However, the holiday
can easily turn into a day filled with stress if you're not careful. By staying
organized, you can ensure that Thanksgiving remains an enjoyable,
memorable, and peaceful day. Here are 10 simple ways to keep the day
stress-free:
1.
Simplify cooking and cleaning: With so many restaurants now open
on Thanksgiving, going out can be a great option for those who want to
enjoy the holiday without the mess. About 30% of restaurants stay open
for the occasion, and some even offer special Thanksgiving meals.
If you'd still like to have the holiday at home, consider grabbing a fully-
cooked meal from a local supermarket or restaurant. Just heat it up, and
you're ready to go. Want a personal touch? Make one special dish to
share. If you’re cooking, ask guests to bring side dishes to avoid
duplicate pies or casseroles—and to lighten your load.
2.
Plan ahead if traveling: If Thanksgiving travel is on your agenda,
preparation is key. Create a packing list well in advance and check off
each item as it goes into your luggage. Keep the list handy for when it’s
time to pack for the return trip. It’s also smart to travel a few days before
or after the main holiday rush to avoid crowded airports and highways.
3.
Get your turkey ready early: For those hosting Thanksgiving and
preparing a turkey, it's essential to plan early. Determine how much
room you have in your fridge and freezer, then order or purchase your
bird. If freezer space is tight, consider asking a neighbor or relative for
help. To save time on the day itself, defrost the turkey a few days ahead
in the refrigerator instead of using the time-consuming water method on
Thanksgiving morning.
4.
Check your supplies: A week or two before Thanksgiving, take
inventory of all the items you'll need for the big meal—tables, chairs,
serving dishes, pots, pans, utensils, and more. If you’re short on
anything, make arrangements to borrow, rent, or buy the missing pieces
to avoid last-minute stress.
5.
Plan your meal on paper: Write down the entire Thanksgiving menu,
from appetizers to desserts, and create a grocery list of every ingredient
needed. You can use paper or a grocery app on your phone. As you
shop, check off each item, ensuring nothing is forgotten.
6.
Organize your cooking schedule: Prepping and cooking a
Thanksgiving meal requires timing and coordination. Make a list of what
needs to be done and in what order, noting start times for each dish.
Once you’ve made your schedule, tape it up in the kitchen where it’s
easy to see and follow.
7.
Cook in advance: Make as much of your meal ahead of time as
possible. Many dishes can be frozen and reheated on the day. For
added convenience, I like to make a few dishes that can be served cold.
This allows you to enjoy the festivities rather than spending the whole
day in the kitchen.
8.
Set up the night before: The night before Thanksgiving is the perfect
time to handle last-minute details. Set the table, lay out your best
silverware, and even plan your wardrobe for the day. If you have kids,
get their outfits ready too so there's one less thing to think about.
9.
Accept help: It’s tempting to try and do everything yourself, but
Thanksgiving is meant to be enjoyed. If someone offers to bring a dish,
say yes. If they want to help with cleanup, graciously say yes!
10.
Make time for gratitude: Most importantly, don’t lose sight of what
Thanksgiving is all about. Whether you say grace before dinner, have a
moment of silence, or share a poem or story, make time to reflect on
health, family, friends, and all the blessings in your life. A simple list of
the things you’re grateful for can help you focus on what truly matters.
By staying organized and planning ahead, your Thanksgiving can be a day
filled with joy, reflection, and connection rather than stress. Enjoy the holiday!
