Organize your fridge for healthy eating

by Maria Gracia Join our newsletter to be notified when the newest Organizing Health and Well-Being is available. Having an organized fridge is great, but why not do double-duty and organize it for healthy eating as well? After all, food is life. Here are a few tips to give your fridge a more nutritional makeover. 1. Trash anything past its prime. If you can’t identify it, or it smells “off”, or you know nobody in your family is ever going to eat it, get rid of it. 2. Give it color. When you open your fridge, be sure you see lots of color…red tomatoes, green broccoli, yellow corn, orange clementines. Keep your veggies and fruits together on one shelf or in the crisper drawer. 3. Freshen up condiments. Do a quick evaluation of all your condiments on your fridge door. Is the mustard fairly fresh, or a sticky mess? Do you have two half-used containers of ketchup in there? Has that jar of pickles been sitting unused for “who knows how many” years? Replace those needing it and weed out anything your family rarely or never eats. By the way, do your condiments include healthy choices like pesto, hummus, and/or salsa? 4. Eliminate sugary beverages. Simple, pure water is the best choice for health and having only one choice keeps the fridge organized too. If you get water from your fridge dispenser, great. No space needed inside the fridge then. If you don’t, get yourself one water pitcher and fill that. No sense taking up space with individual water bottles…and besides, it’s greener not to use them. 5. Keep the deli drawer fresh. It’s very easy for deli meats and cheeses to get forgotten about. Just buy a few choices if you so choose to do so, and use them up within a few days…and definitely before buying any more. 6. Be sure there’s empty space. Don’t jam-pack your fridge. Buy enough for five or so meals…and don’t go grocery shopping until you’re almost out of everything. In doing so, you’ll have less waste…and you can wipe down the fridge to ensure it’s as clean as possible before you reload it. Back to Health and Well-Being Index
