Did You Know? Fun Facts Expiration Dates on Food and Why They’re Costing You Money Did you know that confusion over food expiration dates causes 9 out of 10 people to toss perfectly good food away? The “Use by-Sell by-Enjoy by” dates printed on food containers are not for the consumer and are not safety dates. Rather, they are set by food manufacturers for the grocer. In indicating this date, grocers then know when to rotate older product to make room for newer product. You should purchase the product before the “Sell by” date expires. However, when properly refrigerated, food can last much longer than the expiration date listed. For example, milk will usually remain drinkable for one week after the "sell by" date on the package. Ground beef stored properly in your refrigerator will last for 1 to 2 days after purchasing it, even if the sell-by date expires during that time. To gauge whether a food is still of satisfactory quality to eat, smell and examine it. Discard foods that have developed an off-odor, flavor, or appearance.
