Very often, the best way to tackle a cluttered area you’ve been putting off is to just do it. No pre-scheduling or anything. Just drop everything and handle it once and for all. Let’s say the project you’ve been putting off is organizing your linen closet. Jump in and do it! Empty the area completely. Wipe off shelves or walls. Sort all the items that belong in that area. If something doesn’t belong there, move it to a new area. Make note of items that need to be replaced so you can pick them up. Throw away anything that is beyond its useful life. Launder anything you think should be refreshed before returning to storage. If this is an area where items seem to get contaminated from things nearby, try to come up with a solution to eliminate that. For instance, if you store extra bedding in a cabinet next to a wood burner which causes the linens to smell like you are camping or hanging out at a bonfire, put the camping supplies in that cabinet instead, and the linens elsewhere. Often there are little solutions like this that we can find if we just think about it for a minute. Put smaller, like-items in a bin or box to keep them together. Divide larger items with a storage unit, or even an invisible line in your mind. Label each storage unit you use with its contents. You might even label the shelves themselves. Identifying where things belong helps others in your home keep everything organized. Whatever you do, don’t procrastinate. The longer you wait, the more the clutter builds. If you don’t have time to do it al”, organize one shelf, or one counter, or one drawer at a time. Breaking the project down makes it more doable. Of course, once the project is complete, pat yourself on the back for a job well done! Back to Clutter Index
