Many people are surprised to learn that dishwashers need regular cleaning.
Over time, soap scum, food particles, grease, and other residues can
accumulate inside, becoming a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. To keep
your dishwasher running efficiently and ensure your dishes are truly clean, I
recommend giving it a thorough cleaning once a month. Here’s my easy
step-by-step routine:
1.
Empty it out completely: Once a dishwashing cycle finishes, take
everything out of the dishwasher, including any racks or utensil holders.
2.
Clear out food and grime: Take a good look inside for any visible bits
of food or grime stuck in the bottom, corners, or filters. Don’t forget to
check the utensil rack and any other removable compartments. Give
these a quick rinse or scrub to ensure nothing is lingering that could
cause odor or block water flow.
3.
Run a vinegar cycle: Pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the bottom of
the dishwasher and run it on a hot water cycle with no dishes. Halfway
through, pause the cycle and let the vinegar sit for about 20 minutes to
break down any built-up grease and remove unpleasant odors. After
that, resume and complete the cycle.
4.
Wipe down the exterior: Don’t overlook the outside! Use a damp cloth
to wipe down the dishwasher door, handle, sides, and buttons. These
areas can collect fingerprints, grease, and spills too.
5.
Make it a habit: To keep your dishwasher in tip-top shape, repeat this
process once a month. Regular cleaning can extend the life of your
dishwasher and keep it running more efficiently.
