Most folks are surprised to hear the dishwasher needs to be cleaned.
Over time, soap, food debris, grease, and such builds up…and these are
all breeding grounds for bacteria. My recommendation for you is to clean it
once a month. Here’s how I clean mine:
1.
Empty it out: After you’ve run a cycle, remove everything.
2.
Remove any visible debris: Clean out any clearly visible leftover
bits of food and grime. Don’t forget to check the utensil rack and
other removable compartments, as well as the dishwasher
mechanisms.
3.
Run on empty: Add 2 cups of white vinegar to the bottom of the
dishwasher and run an empty dishwashing cycle. I often stop the
dishwasher halfway through the cycle, and let the vinegar sit on the
bottom for about 20 minutes. I then turn it back on and complete the
cycle.
4.
Don’t forget the exterior: Wipe the dishwasher surface, sides, and
all buttons.
5.
Repeat once a month.
