Jump Start for Cleaning out your Basement

by Maria Gracia Join our newsletter to be notified when the newest Cleaning Secret is available. You walk into your basement and think to yourself, “I really have to clean up down here.” In fact, the job ahead has been haunting you for months. The good news is, it’s not as scary as it may seem. Let me give you a jumpstart on this project, so you can begin and complete it! One big job or many little jobs--it’s your choice! Some people like to work in marathon sessions…dedicating a good, solid 4 to 8 hours at a time. Others prefer to do big jobs, like cleaning out the basement, in small batches (perhaps an hour a day). Decide what you prefer and plan this time out on your calendar. Do your prep work. You’ll need trash bags or boxes: o Donations o Garage sale o Trash o Pass-alongs (items you’re giving to relatives or friends, like the bike your child has outgrown that is being passed along to a cousin) o Bring upstairs (any items you’re rotating out of storage like seasonal décor) o Toxic (for any items that require a special safe disposal method.) Make a big dent. If you already know you have some boxes or piles of stuff, like old camping equipment you know you plan to get rid of, begin there. Seeing a pile of stuff go out is motivating, makes a big dent in the project, and encourages you to keep going. Keep decluttering. Don’t move on from this point until you’ve banished all the things you’re not keeping. This will result in the space you need for the remainder of this project. This means your mission is to physically get rid of all you are not keeping so that these items are no longer on your property…you’ve trashed, donated, passed-along, etc. anything that’s no longer wanted. This may take a consistent daily or weekly effort until it’s down to the bare minimum.   Start sorting. Once you’re down to your “keepers,” begin sorting. Group like-items (holiday décor, sports equipment, etc.) together, and put them in labeled storage containers. Assign an area of your basement for each of these big categories. Consider additional storage tools and buy as needed. Only at this point should you pick up additional storage tools, like containers, shelving, etc. Whether you do this job in a day or two, or an hour at a time over 3 or 4 months, when you’re finally done, congratulate yourself. Treat yourself to something special and bask in the glory of a job well done! Back to Cleaning Secrets Index
