How can I find the time to eat a nutritious

breakfast?

by Maria Gracia Join our newsletter to be notified when the newest Ask Maria is available. Question: I want to eat a nutritious breakfast, but I don’t have the time. I have to get up, get the kids ready for their babysitter, take the dog for a walk, and get myself ready for my job. There’s just no time to make breakfast and eat it before I leave. I end up buying a bagel or donut on the run. I know, really unhealthy. Any thoughts?  Krista, Fort Lee, NJ Maria’s Response Hi Krista, I get it. There are so many responsibilities to take care of each morning that often eating breakfast is placed very low on our priority list. However, breakfast is absolutely the most important meal and skipping it only leads to consequences later on in the day like low energy, lack of focus, and the slow-down of our metabolism making it harder to burn calories. Here are some solutions to make sure you eat breakfast. 1. Get up earlier. You are up early already, but what is 10 more minutes? Go to bed 10 minutes earlier, and set your timer to wake up 10 minutes earlier. Then, you can put together a simple breakfast like smearing a banana with peanut butter, eating a container of Greek yogurt with nuts, or a pre-cooked, hard-boiled egg and a piece of fruit. Assemble your breakfast the night before and put it in the refrigerator to save you even more time in the morning. 2. Pack breakfast AND lunch. Not enough time for breakfast at home? Take your breakfast to work with you, just like you would at lunch. Eat at your desk, during a morning break, or whenever you have a few minutes. Prep it at home the night before or in the morning using the time you’d normally use buying a donut. I always bake healthy muffins on the weekend...these are easy to grab on the run! 3. Keep a container of oatmeal at work. I have a friend who always has a container of oatmeal in his office. If he misses breakfast at home, he makes a bowl of oatmeal at work using the microwave in the break room. There you go...no excuses! Maria Back to Ask Maria Index
