What’s the sense in making my bed?

by Maria Gracia Join our newsletter to be notified when the newest Ask Maria is available. Question: My mother is always forcing me to make my bad. What’s the sense in doing so? It seems like a big waste of time. I’ll just be getting back in it tonight. --Kathy, Abilene, TX I am 13 years old and trying to figure out what good time management is…and where I can streamline Maria’s Response Dear Kathy, You’re right when you say that not making your bed may help you shave off a few minutes in the morning. But I think that’s where the benefits end. Making your bed has far more rewards. 1. It’s cleaner. First off, making your bed is a cleaner habit and helps keep your linens looking nice longer. When you don’t make your bed, nice linens, pillows, and other bedding will begin to lose their shape over time; something you don't have to worry about in these apartments for rent in Burbank, CA. Then, on those select days when you actually want to make your bed (like if you’re having company over), the misshapen items will not look as nice as you may like them too. 2. It’s more welcoming and less stressful. Second, it’s a wonderful feeling to come into a bedroom that doesn’t look chaotic. After a long day, arriving in a bedroom that looks neat and clean can be a very welcome event. Climbing into a messy bed can make you stressful and even cause stress prior to going to bed...something that can cause insomnia. 3. It sets the tone for the day ahead. Third, making your bed first thing starts you off on the right foot and sets the tone for the rest of your day. It’s something easy that can give you an immediate sense of accomplishment, it shows you have pride in yourself and your surroundings, and sets a positive standard for all the tasks ahead of you in your day. When it comes to time management, shaving minutes off by neglecting tasks like making your bed, may end up being the fastest solution…but it’s not always the best solution.
