The Traveling Mom: A Guide To Making Sure Things Are In Order Back Home Travel, explore, gaze and gander. There’s a certain unspoken magic that lives in the thought and feel of going someplace else. To be free to walk among the cultures of the world and to take them in like the aroma of your morning coffee. Music, places, food, and faces. There’s so much to see, so much to do. There’s a world full of wonder out there, just waiting for you. But, the fact of the matter is that it’s difficult to enjoy the thrill of the moment, the beauty that’s around you, if your mind is back at home, thinking, worrying, as all mothers do. And that sense of worry will more often than not keep you from fully experiencing the wonders of the places you find yourself in. For how can you truly immerse yourself if you have worrisome thoughts tugging at your core? Well, that’s where this article comes in. As with most things that cause us a certain level of distress, there’s only one thing that we can do to counteract its negativity — we prepare. And while preparation doesn’t always guarantee success, what it does guarantee is confidence. And being able to give your vote of confidence to your children and their ability to handle things on their own while you’re away is an effective way to not only develop your relationship with each other, but to also develop their confidence in themselves. So, what are the things that you should have in order before going on a trip without your kids? Details You have to tell your children where you’re going and for how long you’re going to be gone. This way, your children can prepare themselves mentally, as well as be able to determine whether they have to take precautions when you’re gone for too long. When you’re going to announce your trip, pick a time when they aren’t tired, stressed, or upset. Accommodations This is a crucial detail that applies both to you and your kids. It’s important that you’re able to find a place where you are able to utilize the technology available to keep in touch with your kids. Wi-Fi should be a need-to-have when booking accommodations. However, if your children are in school and they live in a dorm, then there isn’t really that much to worry about since your children are going to be in good hands throughout your trip. If they're living in off campus housing, check in with them after their classes are done for the day, especially if you’re going away for a very long period of time. Reassurances While a mother’s love may be a fact as obvious as the sky is blue, a little reassurance never hurts, especially when your children are young. It’s a difficult time to be without the gentle touch of a mother, of the comfort that one finds in a mother’s voice. Leave simple reminders around the house, such as letters, trinkets, and photos, to remind your children that they are in your thoughts, even when you aren’t around. These simple things are what keep a relationship afloat and a child’s heart full.
