Things You Can Do To Make a Small Home Work for Your Growing Family Welcoming a new member in the family is always great news. While waiting for the little one to come, parents don’t usually realise the extra space they could be needing which is a requirement for a growing family. So in this article, we’ll let you into some of the adjustments we did as our family grow larger. Take note to adjust the advice here your family’s unique lifestyle. Let’s go. Put entryways in order. Big families have a lot of homework folders, backpacks and shoes. You can tame the clutter by purchasing a cubby for every family member and place them near the front door. Just make sure that everyone will be made responsible to unload their gear into their cubbies as they enter the house. Create a kitchen structure. Buy cabinet and drawer dividers or buy wood so you can personalise one for your family. Spend time to organise the contents of the cabinet according to use. For example, keep all the bakeware in one spot, and place pans in another. Also, consider using smaller bins to manage the food in the pantry. Buy furniture that adds storage. Use furniture that can also be used for storage. A sofa bed or a sofa with a cabinet, for instance, are good replacement options for your bulky sofa.  Also, an armoire can be used to store toys and blankets while an old dresser in the kitchen can help keep loose items and papers organised. Add custom closets. Adding custom closets ensure that you’re using these areas as effectively and efficiently as possible. Organization of small bedrooms is important, so you can maximise the usability of any room. Moreover, you can add designs that include shelves and dressers to remove these furniture pieces from the room area. Lessen furniture. In our case, we use only a single couch! All five of us in the family fit on the couch. And while this won’t work for everyone, you can just use the chairs from the table. Even the coffee table can double as a bench. Live with less. Don’t have a washer or dryer at home? Perhaps these things are things you can do without. The coin laundry in the apartment basement work is a good substitute, right? Don’t have a microwave? You can also make popcorn on the stove. When should a new home be considered? We’ve had in mind to save down payment for a new home for a while now. The kids will eventually grow too big and our space might not provide the space they need to maximise their potentials. We are looking to purchasing a home in a suburb – of course, still in Melbourne where my husband is employed. The real estate community in Melbourne by Lendlease, particularly the Mayfield project is a great find. The place is surrounded by open space and regional recreation centres, with fibre optic broadband and direct highway access, it’s a healthy and well-connected community where our family can grow. Of course, your adjustments shouldn’t forbid you to do the things you love. Host fun birthday parties and have overnight guests from out of town – these things should still be possible. Having a small home shouldn’t limit your social life. Think outside the box! Indeed, living as a large family in a small space tends to get frustrating at times, but by working together, cleaning often, having a fun time together and out of the house, you’ll find that life isn’t just more manageable, but happier as well.
