Enjoying The Outdoors and Making Home Adjustments for the Seasons Spending time outdoors is good for the body and mind. In fact, research shows that people who spend more time outdoors getting a little bit of exercise each week live longer than those who don’t. No matter what the season is, fresh air and sunshine can do the body and mind good. While enjoying time indoors with proper heating and cooling can be relaxing and enjoyable, getting outdoors is important. However, depending on the season, there are some precautions that people should take. Guidelines for spending time outdoors does vary based on the season. Here are a few important tips for enjoying your time outside based on the season your enjoying. Winter- Because the winter is a time when many people would rather stay inside because it’s colder, it is important to make sure you are dressed for the weather when you venture out. While it may seem warmer if you venture out at 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, once the sun goes down it gets colder quickly. Being prepared for weather and temperature changes is important in the winter. Make sure to carry extra clothing if you plan on being out past dark. Additionally, it’s always wise to check the weather forecast before venturing out. While the overall temperatures may seem pleasant enough, wind chill is a factor in the winter. If the wind is whipping up at 15-20 mph, then the "feels like temperature" is going to be 15-20 degrees colder than the actual temperature. Carrying an extra blanket in the car in the event of a problem is a good idea in the winter if you’re traveling far. Additionally, keeping a few sets of hand warmers with you is recommended. Spring- While all seasons can be a bit fickle, spring is certainly noted for it. The day can start warm and sunny and end up cold and damp or vice versa. Remember to always have an extra sweater on hand in the early spring, especially as the season is often just getting underway. Spring is also noted for larger amounts of rain and wind. Because of this, it’s a good idea to keep an umbrella in your car. Paying attention to your local weather when planning to be outside for a good portion of the day will help you better prepare. In late spring, taking suntan lotion with a higher SPF rating is also smart. As the sun gets hotter, sunburns can happen quickly. This is true even if it’s not particularly hot. Checking your UV index is a wise idea. Once May rolls around the sun gets more potent. Summer- While it may seem sunburns are the only concern of summer, there are other important concerns. It is important and highly recommended to have a good SPF rated sunblock. However, being prepared for the warmth also means watching out for heat exhaustion. Making sure to bring plenty of water on any outdoor venture is advisable. Additionally, bringing a few snacks is also important. It is easy to get a bit disoriented if you are taking long walks in summer weather unless you are prepared. That means wearing proper clothing for higher temperatures like cotton, ensuring proper hydration and nutrition. Cooling cloths are a great investment and can keep the body temperature and excessive sweating down to a bare minimum. It is also highly recommended to pay attention to potential storms that may crop up. Severe thunderstorms and spotty tornados occur most in the summer months. Fall- This is an important time to be prepared for both cool and warm temperatures all in one day. The fall is widely noted to be fickle. As with spring, it is advisable to bring along extra clothes in the event it gets chilly. Additionally, because the sun goes down more each day as autumn progresses, keeping track of the time changes is important. Make Proper Adjustments When Indoors No matter what season it is, remember to make proper adjustments when you get back indoors. Going into a nice warm home after being out in the winter feels great. Just remember to peel off the excess clothing once inside your nice warm home. The same applies to summer, going into a nice cool air-conditioned home can feel invigorating after a day at the pool or beach in the sun. Just remember if you’ve gotten too much sun, you may get the chills rather quickly. Proper adjustments of your thermostats are important depending on the outside weather. Remember to get your HVAC system serviced each year so it is always running up to par when you need it. Spring and fall are the best times to have them serviced before the heating and cooling season kicks in. Annual cleanings will help your furnace last longer and catch any minor adjustments that need to be made before it gets more extensive.
