5 Ways to Organize Your Storage Area If you have a storage room in your house, chances are it's a big mess. And this is because of the fact that this little area is so concealed that it doesn't get as much attention as other places like the living room or bedroom. Nonetheless, the storage area has to be one of the many rooms you need to tidy up for the sole reason that you keep most of your items there. Who knows? There will come a time when you have to bring out your porcelain tea set you got for Christmas last year that you haven't even opened yet. That said, you will need to know how you can arrange your storage area and make it easier for you to find the stuff you need whenever you're looking for something. Here are a few tips to help you out. 1. Take stock of everything Effective organizing has to start out with a clear-cut plan. And great planning has to come with creating an inventory of the things that need sorting. That said, you can start by preparing a list of items sorted into categories. From there, you can keep tabs of every item in the storage room. 2. Get rid of clutter Surprised that you have more stuff than you initially thought? It's probably because the majority of the stuff you have there should be classified as clutter. Whether they're receipts from three years ago or broken cell phones, you can either throw them out or sell them at an old-fashioned garage sale. Not only will you be able to declutter your storage but you also get to make a quick buck. 3. Make full use of your boxes Many shipping companies such as FedEx use sturdy boxes for perishable goods and fragile valuables. At best, these boxes can last for years, which makes them ideal tools for organizing. So, instead of throwing your moving boxes to a garbage pile, you can repurpose them for storing items that are sensitive to dust. Old comic books and paper products can be placed in these boxes. Plus, boxes can be stacked on top of each other to provide more space. Don't forget to label these boxes, so you can find whatever it is you need faster. 4. Install new shelves If boxes won't do the trick, you might as well build new shelves in your storage room. That way, you can save space and protect highly fragile items such as porcelain figurines from clumsy fingers. 5. Use garment bags If you have a collection of suits in your closet, keep in mind that these expensive garments can succumb to dust-mites. You might want to keep them inside garment bags for extra protection from the elements. In addition, garment bags can make it easier for you to locate your suits for an emergency occasion. Organizing has to involve a great deal of discipline. Not only that, but you also need to make sure that every nook and cranny is properly accounted for. That way, you won’t have to worry about finding the items you need at the moment you need them.
