Tips on Getting Your Office Organized The clutter and disorganization in your office may seem like no big deal. Perhaps you put it on your list of things to do, but you just never got around to getting it done. What you may not realize, however, is that a cluttered office can lead to a decline in productivity. When you walk into a mess or can’t find what you need right away, it wastes time and causes a lot of unnecessary stress. Gaining control only requires you to get your office in order. Here’s some advice on how to get it all done: Minimize the Clutter Much like your home, it is very easy to start collecting clutter and junk you don’t need in the office. This takes up space and makes it harder to organize the space. So, the best way to get a handle on things is to purge your office. Take a look around and see what things haven’t been used in a while. Here is some advice on how to get rid of or reduce the mess: Donate old furniture and devices Scan all paperwork and then shred to conserve storage space Invest in an office water dispenser to keep recyclables like water bottles from piling up Sell items of value (but of no use to you) to generate more cash for your business Set Up Work Areas After you’ve gotten rid of all the items in the office that you no longer need and reduced waste, you should have a lot of free space to work with. To keep your office organized, you should consider creating work zones or stations. This gives everything a designated area to go in so that you don’t have to cram things where they don’t belong. You’ll need a place for your desk and computer, files, office supplies, inventory, and of course, a place for entertaining clients. Invest in Storage The key to keeping clutter to a minimum in your office is to have ample storage for all your things. There are plenty of storage ideas you can consider. Shelves are great for holding supplies and books. Filing cabinets are ideal for holding important documents. You can also invest in smaller storage items like folder holders, desk organizers, and plastic bins. Label Everything Not being able to find something important can slow down your work day immensely. You can put a rest to it, or at least reduce the likelihood of this happening by labeling everything. Labeling is a great organization method and it can help you find what you’re looking for faster. Label your file cabinets, plastic bins, and other storage areas so you know exactly where to find what you’re looking for. Clean as You Go Now that you’ve gotten your office organized, you want to make sure you keep up with it. This will require you to follow a process that allows you to clean as you go. When you’re working with physical files, for instance, you shouldn’t wait any longer than a week to place them back in the file cabinet. When the water bottles from your cooler are empty, contact a service provider right away to come to remove them rather than piling them up in your office. At the end of every business day, make sure you’ve placed all desk supplies back in their spots and that your desk is free of clutter. It is habits like these that help to keep your office organized daily. Working in clutter and filth is never a good idea. You can’t get anything done. When you’re not staring at the piles of crap around the office, you’re rummaging through them trying to find something important. Don’t sacrifice productivity when the solution is this simple. All you have to do is get rid of the clutter, organize what you need, label everything, and a day in the office will run a lot smoother.
