Life Beyond Divorce: How To Put Yourself Back Together After A Divorce Divorce. There are few things in adult life that can be more painful than having to let go of someone you once loved with all your heart. It doesn’t matter if you wanted the split or if you were forced into it. It hurts just the same, like a deep cut to the heart. And while it may feel like the buttresses of your world are crumbling and falling around you in a cacophony of wild emotions, you know deep down inside that this too shall pass, like a storm that must be weathered. You know, there really isn’t much of a choice to be made here. You have to carry on. It’s difficult to have such a drastic change in your lifestyle. A divorce will leave you emotionally, mentally, and sometimes financially burdened. The truth is that you’re going to feel like the world just turned upside down on you and that there’s no way you’re going to be able to proceed with your life. And that’s alright. It’s perfectly fine to grieve. It’s perfectly fine to give yourself time and space to breathe. Lie in bed, eat ice cream directly from the tub and listen to the songs you once loved together. But this shouldn’t last too long. You’re going to have to pick yourself up eventually. And well, these are some of the things that could aid you in your recovery: Seek Support From Your Friends Spending more time with your friends is going to help keep you from doing something stupid, whether that’s engaging in self-harm, drunk-dialing your ex, or posting nasty things on social media. Your friends will help guide you through this period, with subtle reminders that you are not alone in your struggle. Seek Professional Help Friends are helpful. But, you have to admit that sometimes, if you truly want to jump-start your life anew, you need to do so with the help of a professional. This can be either a therapist or a spiritual advisor. Motivation is a difficult thing to come by when you feel like you’ve lost so much. It’s these professionals who are not only trained to give you sound advice, but they are also going to be able to show you a perspective that isn’t biased towards you. It’s even more necessary to seek the help of a lawyer if you’ve had children during the marriage. At his point, considering joint physical custody may keep you from feeling isolated and it’ll also help you nurture your relationship with your children. Rediscover The Things You Love When you fall in love with someone, you then begin to associate happiness with them. They literally become the source of your happiness even when there are so many things in the world that could make you happy. Retraining your brain into thinking that you can indeed find happiness in other things and in other people is an effective way of recovering from a divorce. Make a bucket list of the things you want to do and work through them one at a time. You’ll find that you can be happy again, even if it’s going to take a while.
