Keeping Your Home Free of Pests Everybody hates to have pests inside the house. We think of our homes as being exclusively for our own use, not for dirty, scary, destructive insects. Unfortunately, we all run into the occasional infestation. It's in this situations when you need to contact pest control in San Diego  or your closest major city for help, especially when we're dealing with problems like termites or cockroaches. We can also do a lot ourselves to prevent infestations of many insects, long before they require the services of an exterminator. Use these simple strategies to keep them under control. Reducing Access Even the newest home will have the odd gap or crack in it. Doors and windows are notorious. Caulk any of these areas that reveal even a tiny gap. You'll keep bugs out and save on energy, too. Pay attention to door sweeps as well. When we rely on screen doors and storm doors through warm summer weather, we may be permitting too much access. Sweeps can be adjusted to fit more tightly, reducing the chance of insects finding their way in. Eliminating Food Sources Pests often wander into the home, and you may even see an ant or a fruit fly passing through occasionally. These critters won't stay (and won't bring their friends) if they can't find anything to eat, so sometimes the easiest thing to do is to deal with food sources. Watch for spills of all kinds. Not only should you make every effort to clean up spilled drinks and crumbs (a full-time job with kids), you should also try to store your pet food as securely as possible to keep pests from finding it. The less they find to eat, the more likely they are to go elsewhere. Managing Pet Movement Speaking of pets, they can often be a form of transportation for pests. Ticks and fleas can climb aboard your pet while it's outdoors, then disembark from the Rover Bus at Living Room Station where it's onto Bedroom Junction. You have to cut this transit system off. It's best just to have pets that are exclusively outdoor or exclusively indoor, but failing that, control pests around the yard and use repellents on the pet himself or herself. Reducing the populations of ticks in the yard will provide fewer passengers, and the repellent collars will discourage them from boarding your beagle. Watching Your Habits Sometimes it's not your pet to blame for an insect intruder. It's you. One of the most upsetting pests around is the bedbug, and it is easily moved via clothing and luggage. If you spend a night in an infested hotel, the bugs check out with you and make their own reservations at your house. Prevention is essential here. Research the Bedbug Registry before booking a hotel room, and avoid lodging with unresolved bedbug issues. When you first get to a room, don't unpack until you thoroughly inspect the beds for the telltale signs of bedbug issues. Insects and other pests are very disturbing. They make the home look unclean to others, no matter how much scrubbing and cleaning you do, and they are upsetting to our kids (and ourselves!) Anytime a pest problem calls for an exterminator, don't hesitate. The longer you wait, the worse the problem will get. In terms of prevention, though, there is a lot you can do to keep from having to call professional help, and the steps outlined above are an easy way to do it.
