5 Tips for Making Your Home Look Neater Than It Is Would your friends describe you as a neat freak? Does the tiniest bit of clutter in the house make you crazy? Are you the kind of person who cleans the house before the cleaning service arrives so they don’t see your mess? Great! You are firmly in the minority and this article does not apply to you. For everyone else, life gets a little messy. And that’s okay. The kids are going to sometimes eat on the couch. The dog that is way too big to be inside is going to sometimes knock over the plant. And good luck getting everyone to take their shoes off at the door. Your house, inside or out, is never going to make it onto the cover of Better Homes & Garden. But with these 5 easy tips, it can pass for a lot neater than it is: 1. Dress Up the Exterior If you notice that your neighbor has one of those Eclipse Awning type products shading their windows or porch, you will have noticed how neat and trim their house looks. It is one of those finishing touches that makes your house look, well, finished. Houses next to it feel a little unfinished by comparison. Hedges around the base of the house also serve to give your home that finished appearance. Large potted plants bracketing the entrance can feel like a part of the construction. All of these methods make the home look a lot neater. 2. Install a Lawn Feature Everyone loves a fountain. They look great and sound like magic is in the air. Fountains of all shapes and sizes immediately catch the eye. They can also serve double-duty as statues and functional works of art. Another inviting lawn feature is a park bench. You can sit out in a manicured section of the lawn and feed the birds (don’t forget the bird feeder), read a book, or just watch the world go by. Even if you never use it, there is something about a park bench that brightens up the whole neighborhood. While you are considering a bench, you might want to go all in on a front yard gazebo. With a feature like that, you don’t have to worry about curb appeal. You will have it in abundance. 3. Take Care of the Windows When it is time to do the spring cleaning, don’t forget to spend some time on the windows. Glass gets really dirty. And it is quite visible when your windows are dingy. It is one of those things that can make your home look less neat than it really is. You can also distract from some of the clutter by placing small but interesting plants on the window ledge. The casual observer will have something else to look at besides the inside of your house. The plants will obscure the view. And they will also make the place look alive and fresh. 4. Create More Empty Space It doesn’t matter how neatly arranged things are. If you have too many things in the living space, it will just look cluttered. You can make your home look much neater by removing a few pieces. Removing clutter from your home is the key to keeping it neat and clean. 5. Light It Up One of the simplest steps you can take to make your house look neater is adding lawn lights along the driveway. It is not only functional, but beautiful. Did I mention it is also inexpensive? It is simple enough that you can do it yourself, today. You could also add some year-round lights to your shrubs along the base of the house. You don’t have to wait for the holidays to make your house look festive. And it goes without saying that you should have night lights for your porch for safety reasons if nothing else. You don’t actually have to be a neat freak to make your house look like a neat freak lives there. Dress it up. Add a lawn feature. Give the windows some love. Create empty spaces on the inside. And light it up. Oh, and stop letting your kids eat chips on the couch.
