How to Fund Your Retirement When You Haven’t Saved Enough Although commercials on television, usually sponsored by financial firms that manage retirement accounts, show retirement as a joyful time when you will live out the rest of your life as if it were an extended vacation, many people, including you, may not have this optimistic view of retirement.  Only a few people have had the good fortune to stay with a particular company for decades, building a good 401(k) in the process. Fewer still have retired with a pension plan. So, if you never got around to organizing your finances and creating a retirement plan, you're not alone. In reality, people often try many careers, lose jobs unexpectedly, don’t smoothly roll over their 401(k) from one company to another, and contribute enough to their retirement funds. As a result, a vast majority of people will not have the money they need to afford a comfortable retirement. Still, if this describes your situation, there is something you can do about it. You can start actively investing and learning a new high-value skill, making up through investment income and income generation what you may not have been able to set aside for your retirement. Let’s take a look at investment and income opportunities available to help you enjoy a better retirement than simply hoping to pay all your bills with a social security income. Invest in Real Estate Real estate has been used for centuries as a way to build wealth quickly. But it isn’t easy. In order to do well in real estate, you must understand the specialized terminology and legal issues. You must understand concepts like amortization, assessed value, land trust, cash reserves, closing, and so on. Fortunately, if you’re willing to take a few courses in the subject to get up to speed, then you’ll be informed enough to manage any real estate transactions, come up with strategies to finance your deals, and manage your real estate business ventures. The nice thing about real estate is that you can do the work once and then get paid for it for many years. Buying a few rental properties, for instance, will allow you to earn a steady income from tenants. You don’t even have to manage the properties yourself during your retirement, but can outsource it to a property management company. Develop a Work-from-Home Skill If you’re an A-type personality, you’re more like a racehorse that loves to compete, and the idea of retirement and watching endless hours of predictable television programming to occupy your mind may feel like being put out to pasture. If you happen to be someone in good physical health who derives a great deal of meaning and satisfaction from work, then the typical retirement dream of endless hours pursuing leisurely activities may seem like a nightmare. But it isn’t necessary to go into an office or store or other places of work for eight or more hours a day to earn an income. Nor is it necessary to spend your retirement years watching television, visiting with your grandchildren, or trying out new restaurants every week. You don’t have to continue commuting, putting up with office politics, or deal with ruthless managers. You can earn a good living by learning a skill that you can use to generate an income online.  For instance, you could become a front-end developer, a back-end developer, or even a full stack developer. There are many online and offline schools that will teach you everything you need to know about how to write code. They will familiarize you with the world of software technology. Incidentally, software skills are only one example out of hundreds of things you could do to work from home. In conclusion, if you haven’t saved up enough money for retirement through a 401 (k) or an IRA, there are still plenty of ways to earn more than enough money to enjoy your present standard of living. If you’re open to thinking outside the box, then think of investment or earning opportunities that you could pursue to keep a healthy cash-flow during your retirement years.
