5 Ways to Energize Your Work Environment On average, most people will spend 50% of their waking day at work, which translates to 25% of their entire lifetime. Multiple studies have shown that a poor work environment leads to a wide range of mood, sleep and anxiety disorders, but fortunately there are some simple (and low cost) steps that you can take to alleviate these problems. 1. Shed Some Light on the Situation Not only is poor lighting potentially hazardous, a lack of natural sunlight is clinically proven to have an adverse effect on mood. Low levels of natural light lead to increased reporting of mood disorders, disturbed sleep and higher levels of stress (Northwestern University Chicago Study, 2013). Fortunately, installing Full Spectrum or natural daylight bulbs is shown to have a marked effect on the reduction of these symptoms. 2. Give Yourself a Break It's common sense that a lack of exercise will have a negative effect on your physical fitness, but the HSE makes it clear that a sedentary lifestyle can also damage your mental health. People often raise their eyebrows at the suggestion that VDU users should take a 5-10 minute break for every hour they work, moving away from your screen doesn't mean downing tools completely.
