Back Pain: What Could Possibly Go Wrong? Back pain is a common misery for most people. It can be in the upper shoulders, in the lower portion, the middle or the spine. Wherever the pain is, it truly is bothersome, at times excruciating, and can last for several days. Productivity drops as your movement is limited. You might even miss work if it can't be endured. And to relieve the pain, you often go to the pharmacy and get whatever over-the-counter medicines you can get your hands on.. Around 80% of the population has experienced back pain at some point in their lives. Even youngsters like children and teens can have it. While common, back pain is nonetheless complicated since it is so hard to determine what might cause it, especially if the pain happens suddenly and not from an accident. Undoubtedly, you or someone you know has been troubled by back pain. Symptoms might include stiffness in certain parts of the body or a muscle ache. Others may experience stabbing or sharp pain. Back pain can be a precursor to an illness, or just a strain from sudden movements or exerting too much effort like lifting heavy objects. In most cases, it can last for a few weeks. If it does not improve, you may need to seek immediate medical attention as it may be a symptom of a serious condition such as: Arthritis. Back pain is one of the symptoms of osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease affecting the joints of your spine and hips. Other symptoms include stiff neck, loss of flexibility and grating sensation in your joints. Infections. Back pain isn’t just affecting your bones and the spine. It can also indicate a lingering infection. Back pain with fever and vomiting can be signs of bladder and kidney infections, particularly urinary tract infections (UTI). On the other hand, a stiff neck, muscle and joint aches, with swollen lymph nodes and redness on the skin can be Lyme disease, a bacterial infection caused by black-legged ticks. Back pain is also a symptom of meningitis, a life-threatening infection that affects the the membranes around the brain and spinal cord. Other symptoms include seizures, loss of appetite, severe headaches and a stiff neck. Herniated Disc. A low-back pain that is causing extreme pain might be an indication of a ruptured or herniated disc, the jellylike substance on the vertebrae. This can be caused by an injury. So be extra careful when doing laborious work like lifting heavy objects. Another cause, a natural one, is old age. Osteoporosis. For this bone disorder, back pain is an obvious and lingering symptom. More often than not, you won’t be aware if you have it until you suffer a fracture. But, back pain coupled with a stooped structure can be a signal of impending osteoporosis. Sciatica. This one affects your sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body that runs from the lower back down to the back of each leg. Signs include lower back pain, burning or tingling in the leg, or a sharp pain which makes it difficult to stand. Others. Back pain is also a precursor to several disorders such as abdominal aortic aneurysm, tumors, skeletal irregularities, muscle strain or kidney stones. Do not ignore back pain that never quits. If it stays long enough that it impedes your movement, it is time to schedule a doctor’s appointment. Physical examination and advanced laboratory tests can end the guesswork and help the physician to diagnose a problem, if there is any. The doctor may also seek an expert’s help, like a physiotherapist or a local NYC chiropractor, for certain conditions.
