Build Credibility by Maria Gracia Credibility is so important in starting and growing your own business. But how do you build credibility, when you have only a little bit of experience in your field? Here are a few simple ideas: 1) DO SOME JOBS 'GRATIS' AND GET TESTIMONIALS. Before you begin actively marketing your business, get some good testimonials under your belt. If you offer a service, give some friends, family members or associates a few hours of your consulting or organizing time for free. This will give you an excellent opportunity to gain some experience. When you've completed the job, get written comments and testimonials from your 'customers' and use these comments in your marketing materials and in your portfolio. If you offer a product, give the product to a few people for free to let them try it out. Again, be sure to get testimonials after the product evaluation period. 2) WRITE ARTICLES, AND GET THEM PUBLISHED. Many newspapers, Web sites and community publications are looking for articles written by experts. Write about something you know well, and work on getting those articles published. Once you get into one or two publications, you can promote the fact that you have been published in these publications. It will also be easier for you to be published in larger publications, once your articles have appeared in smaller publications. 3) DEVELOP A PRESENTATION, AND PRESENT. Public speaking is a powerful way to build your credibility. Come up with a presentation that could benefit thousands of people, and offer your speaking services to the Chamber of Commerce, your local church group and other organizations on a regular basis. 4) BUILD A PRESENCE ON THE WEB. Even if you're just selling organizing services to a local market, a Web site is a must in today's society. A well designed Web site, gives you a professional edge. Once you're on the Web, be sure you market your site so that it begins to become well known. 5) WRITE A BOOK. This may sound far-fetched, but if you take it a chapter at a time, and dedicate the next year to writing your own book, you will be able to gain an enormous amount of credibility with both your clients, and the media.
